They are one of the teams which give the lie to the current soccer system: SC Freiburg, from the most South-Western point of Germany, were promoted to the first German division (Bundesliga) in 1993, have remained there except for the 1997/98 season and are back in the second division again. Not the usual, high wages, but promoting young players: Coach Volker Finke, leader of the pack since 1991, has contrived a modern, intelligent system (with a flexible 2-6-2) for a team which is said to play soccer of the most attractive style.
