The 41
episodes of the Sledge Hammer! series are still on the top of my screen playlist, although
they date back to the years 1986/87 when they were first broadcast on ABC in the U.S. (in
Germany they were on RTL and are currently running on S-RTL). Inspector Sledge Hammer,
played by David Rasche and created by Alan Spencer, is a screwy cop in hideous suits and
always behind black sunglasses, is fourty years old (but: "I was a man nine years
before I was born"), hates women and marriage ("It's driving the wrong way down
a one-way street and having a head-on collision with a dumptruck called your wife.")
but talks to his Magnum 45 called Susie, doesn't fear devil nor death (but the control of
firearms, liberalism and official search warrants) and is jealous "of one man only:
Custer". Most of the episodes are bursting with allusions to well-known movies (cf. the corresponding titles), on the whole they are pure but subtle slapstick. Sledge's colleague is Detective Dori Doreau (Anne-Marie Martin), who has to stand his unconventional but hitting methods which made Captain Trunk (Harrison Page) a desperate and choleric cynic. As there is an awesome website done by Phrank containing all the necessary information (where I have stolen all the pictures from) I content myself with the listing of the single episodes and my personal rankings. By the way, it might be important to know that the second season (The Early Years) plays before the first one, at the end of which Sledge (and we all) must die due to a nuclear detonation caused by our favourite cop. Please notice: As you can see, I still lack the first epiosde (Under the Gun). If you have access to it (VHS) feel free and inform me! |
